Using New Technology to Relive Old Technology

Reliving the past rarely has any appeal to me, but as I watch Brian doing the happy dance and cheering while playing the Wii I have to wonder. What is he playing that makes him so excited, you may ask? No, it's not Mario Kart or the latest Star Wars. It's called Blades of Steel.

You know, for the original Nintendo.

The Wii (when connected to the internet) will let you download old Nintendo and Sega games. Let me tell you, original Nintendo graphics on our HDTV are not so hot. B commented early today that he "remembered the graphics being a lot better than this". The reality is probably that the TV he remembers was much worse and therefore comprable to the graphics. The funny thing is, we really don't care that they look so rediculous! It's so much fun to pull out these old games that we grew up with.

The Wii is really quite the interesting little thing. This morning it kicked my behind with Wii Fit--I can still feel my arms and legs protesting the strength games. B and I can play with our nephews in Oregon, and do so often. It's a really fun way to keep in touch with them, and also keeps us very humble about our minimal Mario Kart skills. We've also downloaded Tetris, which still holds my attention for a much longer time period than it has any right to.

So obviously, since we have time to play video games, the new semester has started. School seems just dandy so far, the happy thought being that at the end of this semester I get that little, psychotically expensive piece of paper. Woo!

Maybe they'll give me a minor in Wii, too.

ah, the wii.

besides, who needs graphics with blades of steel? you could most likely emulate it with near perfect accuracy using a deck of playing cards and sharpees to mark blue and red teams.

and it would still be awesome.
